Colonel Ternus' Bio
Lieutenant
Colonel Ternus entered the military in 1992, first on active
duty and then transitioned to the reserves in 1997. She
is a trauma
flight nurse and has deployed in support of multiple operations
including Operation Joint Endeavor (Bosnia) and Operation
Iraqi Freedom. She has authored over 35 publications,
including a chapter on military
aeromedical evacuation nursing in the International Flight
Nurse Core
Curriculum; a chapter on flight survival, search and rescue;
a chapter
on public policy in nursing education; and articles on the
importance of
forging international military medical partnerships.
She
focused her PhD
dissertation “Expeditionary Medical Diplomacy: A Formative
Evaluation
of the International Health Specialist Program” on a
critical Air
Force program designed to build bridges between countries and
support
national strategic policy. Her current research is on
the impact of
deployment on military women who are mothers of adolescents. This
research is critical in order to support military women and
to
understanding the effects of maternal absence on adolescent
development,
risk behaviors and health, as well as understanding the health
and
development of military women.
Lt Col Ternus is also
a mother and
deployed when her daughter was aged 8 and 15.
