Lieutenant Colonel Ternus' Bio

monaLieutenant Colonel Ternus entered the military in 1992, first on active duty and then transitioned to the reserves in 1997.  She is a trauma flight nurse and has deployed in support of multiple operations including Operation Joint Endeavor (Bosnia) and Operation Iraqi Freedom. She has authored over 35 publications, including a chapter on military aeromedical evacuation nursing in the International Flight Nurse Core Curriculum; a chapter on flight survival, search and rescue; a chapter on public policy in nursing education; and articles on the importance of forging international military medical partnerships.

She focused her PhD dissertation “Expeditionary Medical Diplomacy: A Formative Evaluation of the International Health Specialist Program” on a critical Air Force program designed to build bridges between countries and support national strategic policy.  Her current research is on the impact of deployment on military women who are mothers of adolescents.  This research is critical in order to support military women and to understanding the effects of maternal absence on adolescent development, risk behaviors and health, as well as understanding the health and development of military women.

Lt Col Ternus is also a mother and deployed when her daughter was aged 8 and 15.
